About the Author
Viva Van Story grew up in a small town in Wisconsin, where she dreamed of one day being an artist. Right after high school she headed to New York City, with a suitcase, portfolio and $100. She took drawing classes at Parsons whilst doing odd jobs to pay the rent and then she met photographer John Santerineross and her direction changed. Modelling for John for his book Fruits of the Secret God opened her eyes to a new medium with many possibilities: Viva decided it was time for her to take charge, and she stepped to the other side of the lens.
It’s been a heady journey since that time. Known above all for her perfectionism and command of mood and light, Viva has become one of the most recognised photographers on the scene, shooting both private and commercial commissions all over the world. Her work has appeared in numerous publications and magazines. In 2010, she cemented her reputation with her best-selling solo book for Korero: Viva’s Pinups – Bullet Bras and Backseat Betties. With this latest body of work, Viva is exploring new ground: “I think of my work as being in a constant state of evolution — I want to keep pushing the boundaries.”
