Between 1988 and 2006, Danny Hellman’s artwork appeared on the covers of New York’s most notorious sex tabloid. With more than a hundred covers that gleefully mocked polite society and took aim at authority, Hellman became a defining voice in the magazine’s visual assault on the establishment.
The View from Screw is the first-ever anthology of Hellman’s Screw artwork, bringing together his provocative covers with rare and previously unpublished strips and illustrations from the magazine’s pages. Featuring exclusive commentary and behind-the-scenes stories, this collection offers an insider’s view of the artwork, the magazine and the rebellious culture that surrounded it.
About the Artist
Danny Hellman has worked as an illustrator since 1988. His award-winning work has appeared in a wide range of national and international publications, including Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, New York Press, Guitar World, FHM, Revolver, The Village Voice, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal and Screw magazine.
His comics work has appeared in DC Comics’ Bizarro World, Paradox Press’ Big Books series, Last Gasp’s Comics & Stories, Fantagraphics’ Hotwire and elsewhere. He is also the editor and publisher of the critically acclaimed comics anthologies Legal Action Comics Volumes 1 & 2, Typhon (2006) and Jacked Tracts (2024).
Hellman lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and daughter.
